As Musings readers know, every year I choose a theme that is aspirational, composed of qualities that I want to focus on developing, honing, and embodying. It is a beacon to guide my thoughts, attitudes, and actions. Although my theme each year is influenced by external realities and events, it is born out of a desire to seek deeper understanding from lessons that life presents.
I’m grateful that my 2024 Theme “Fully Present, Deeply Peaceful” helped me get through a tumultuous and tough year feeling present to people and situations, and with a peaceful heart. This year will come with new challenges as well as new opportunities. After much reflection, I have decided my 2025 theme is Curious, Courageous, Compassionate. It is designed to stretch me, gird me, and engage me with the ever-changing world.
Curious will mean I am open to seeing people and situations from different lenses. I am curious about a wide variety of things, including art, culture, nature, literature, history, and music. It is especially important to me to better understand others whose way of thinking is new or different than mine. My intention is to let curiosity lead me beyond what appears on the surface to better understand what (or whom) I’m seeing, hearing, thinking about. I want to be an explorer of people, places, and perspectives.
Courageous is one of three virtues I have sought to learn about, practice, and embody for over forty years. When and how courage is called for changes over a lifetime. This year will demand that I be courageous in how I show up to face the challenges ahead, whether in my personal, professional, or public life. (No, this is not an announcement that I’m running for office; just that I am more aware of the life I lead in my community and country.) I will show up, speak up, and stand up for myself and others. Living courageously will bring personal growth, learning, and (I hope) equanimity.
Compassionate will mean I will treat others with kindness and respect. In general, I am tuned in to what others are experiencing and feeling. Compassion, to me, is taking action that honors the humanity of others. It is empathy, concern, and love that move me to act. My intention is to also be compassionate towards myself. That requires healthy self-care, loving relationships, and self-awareness of today’s Sharon.
If I can support you in creating and living out your own theme for 2025, please ask. I wish you happiness, health, and meaningful relationships this year.
Warm regards,
Sharon
